marks in the sand
Created and maintained by Chris Biles
Life is a journey and I walk it step by step. Noticing the small things makes my heart beat, feeling the magnitude of the big things checks my step and ensures I walk the right path. I love music, words, images, art. I love the majesty and complexity of the natural world, playing within its realms. And I love the connectivity and depth of humanity, the fact that we are only people through other people (ubuntu).
In my work, I enjoy playing with the light and the dark, and am fascinated by the endless tints and shades of gray born by the two. I don’t shy away from pain, but try to present it in a way that both honors and translates it (hopefully) so that others may feel a connection, or discover something new in their own experience. I see my work, and that of others, as marks in the sand – coming and going, their existence, then their memory, helping to shape and reshape my life.
I am a poet, published in a number of journals, magazines, and anthologies in-print and online. I am a musician, principally a jazz drummer, though I strum a guitar and sing when I feel the calling. I am a visual arts dabbler, exploring photography, printmaking, meditative drawing, and various other endeavors. And I enjoy combining these different forms, allowing inspiration from one to inspire another.
